MUSIC is LIFE
SINGER • Songwriter • Musician • CREATIVE Expressionist
Sis is a Los Angeles, California based artist (originally from the DMV) who began singing at the ripe age of 7 in her grandfather's church. Growing up in a musical family, and having been taught to play the classical piano at the age of 8 by an elder cousin, songwriting and performing came naturally. She first began recording in high school with an acapella group Major Minors and continued on to record for commissioned projects such as theme music, voice overs, and songs for local special events. While studying fine art in college, she formed a girl-group in collaboration with three childhood friends and incredible vocalists REIGN and began performing across the DMV area.
Being a somewhat shy artsy child, Sis always found confidence and refuge in the comfort of poetry and songwriting, and developed an inseparable relationship with music rooted in honesty. Raised in the 90's during the "golden era" of hip-hop, the backpack rap lyrical style of social consciousness and black nationalism flavored with jazz, p-funk, and R&B soul samples over skeletal beats (artists such as Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Lauryn Hill, Common, and OutKast) influenced Sis most prominently. Remnants of this eclectic positive-energy sound as well as a sense of a royal self awareness (hence the often used moniker "King Sis") can be found in her music
